Collaborating with Drama Schools Across India: A Journey of Enrichment

Theatre has the unique ability to connect people across cultures and backgrounds. It was evident when Drama School Mumbai (DSM) students from the batch of 2023–24 participated in an enriching exchange programme at Ninasam.

The two sections of this batch embarked on different yet equally transformative journeys—one at Ninasam Theatre Institute in Karnataka, and the other in Bangalore. These experiences offered the students opportunities to explore different approaches to theatre and deepen their understanding of its role in society.

A Unique Experience at Ninasam
One section of the DSM batch began their exchange at Ninasam Theatre Institute, nestled in the serene surroundings of Heggodu, Karnataka. The peaceful environment, with its lush greenery and calm atmosphere, set the stage for a week of learning and collaboration. DSM students and Ninasam students shared meals, conversations, and performances, creating a sense of community that transcended language and cultural barriers.
One of the highlights was watching NTI’s Kannada-adapted production of The Sultan’s Dilemma. Despite the language difference, the performance’s physicality and live music made it engaging and accessible. In return, DSM students performed Agni aur Barkha, an adaptation of Girish Karnad’s The Fire and the Rain. The differences in artistic influences and training between the two groups led to rich discussions and feedback sessions, fostering mutual learning.

Artistic Exploration in Bangalore
The other section of the batch continued their journey in Bangalore, engaging with local theatre-makers under the guidance of theatre director Sunil Shanbag and DSM’s academic head, Irawati Karnik. Workshops and discussions with artists like Sharanya Ramprakash and members of the Aravani Art Project challenged the students to think critically about issues such as cultural appropriation and the role of theatre in social change.
This exchange was about more than just performances and workshops—it was about building bridges and finding common ground through theatre. As DSM continues to collaborate with drama schools across India, these experiences will shape the future of theatre education, nurturing a new generation of thoughtful and empathetic theatre-makers.
