From Workshop to Classroom: 300 Teachers Empowered, Impacting Over 210,000 Students

At DSFM, we understand the profound impact theatre can have on education. Our recent initiative in Ratnagiri, in collaboration with Anubandh and Gadre Foundation, aimed to empower 300 teachers with innovative drama-based teaching tools. Each of these teachers is now positively impacting an average of 700 students, bringing the total to over 210,000 students who are benefiting from this transformational program.

Redefining Learning with Theatre: Led by theatre expert Mandar Gokhale, the year-long program introduced a structured module where teachers learned to integrate theatre games into their teaching methods. The goal was simple: to make learning more engaging and accessible. As one teacher explained, “The subjects that were difficult for students have now become easier, and they have started liking them. That is because the method of teaching has changed. The teachers have new tools, which is teaching through play.”

Unleashing Student Potential: The transformation in students has been extraordinary. Previously reserved or disengaged students are now actively participating in classroom activities. “There are some students who usually remain at the back of the class, but because of these exercises, every student has started participating,” a teacher noted. The impact of this shift is visible across subjects, with students showing a newfound enthusiasm for learning.

A Program That Works: This initiative stands out not just for its innovative approach, but for the tangible results it has delivered. Teachers, who were once skeptical about the implementation of workshop techniques in real classrooms, are now advocates for drama-based learning. “This was the first-ever program where we were guided so well, and it was a very energetic workshop, unlike anything we had experienced before,” shared a teacher.

The Road Ahead: As we continue to witness the positive effects of this program, our commitment to expanding drama-based learning remains strong. The success in Ratnagiri serves as a model that we aim to replicate in other regions, ensuring that more teachers and students can experience the benefits of theatre in education.
