Unrehearsed Futures – Season 1 Featured in Theatre, Dance and Performance Training
The impact of the series was in addressing the challenges of theatre education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Unrehearsed Futures Season 1 has been featured in the Theatre, Dance and Performance Training journal, Volume 12, 2021 – Issue 1. This milestone highlights the impact of our series in addressing the challenges of theatre education during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Launched in March 2020, as the world confronted unprecedented disruption, Unrehearsed Futures was born out of the need to rethink how we teach theatre when physical presence was no longer possible. Curated by Jehan Manekshaw of Drama School Mumbai (DSM) and Amy Russell of Embodied Poetics, the series brought together 16 speakers from across the globe to explore new approaches to theatre pedagogy in a digital world.
One of the central themes of the season was the exploration of self-directed learning in the absence of traditional school structures. Dr. Felipe Cervera’s reflections on this shift resonated with many, offering insights into how students could take greater ownership of their learning journey. Additionally, the potential for embodied learning in online spaces, through individual exercises and focused one-on-one sessions, emerged as a key discussion point.
The season also tackled broader global disruptions, such as social justice movements and environmental crises, which have further challenged conventional teaching models. Despite these challenges, the resilience of students was evident as they continued to create, collaborate, and perform in the digital space.
